QUERY: The surname Thinnes, Thinis, or even occasionally Tennis bears a close resemblance to the Thimmes family name, commonly found in and around Lancaster, but is a separate family. Bible records, and some at St Mary\’s, support the fact that Joseph Thinis and his wife Katherine died near Sugar Grove in 1845 and 1844 respectively, but we have been unable to locate their stones. Perhaps someone who knows the Thimmes history well would know if any of those records possibly these first names and death dates, making it suspicious that the surnames were recorded incorrectly, and might actually be Thinnes. As these dates correspond possibly to records lost from Elmwood or the earlier pioneer cemetery that formerly sat beneath today\’s firehouse in Lancaster, any expertise there much appreciated as well.
